Summary:
- Provides quality guidance/education to the lactating patients at CCH, both in the Maternal Child areas and in other departments as needed. Participates in establishment of standards, policies, procedures and guidelines for breastfeeding. Supports the mission, philosophy and the objectives of Chester County Hospital and the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Practice
1. Provides age appropriate care for the population served. Gives consideration to growth and developmental phase of life and to age related factors
2. Uses appropriate resources for patients with special needs such as language barriers, sensory problems, altered cognition, cultural and religious needs
3. Ensures attention to patient’s physical, spiritual and emotional well being
4. Promotes family centered care
5. Educates, promotes and supports breastfeeding
6. Demonstrates competency in breastfeeding assessment skills and assists staff in assessment of breastfeeding knowledge, comfort and education
7. Identifies potential discharge planning needs and notifies RN caring for mother/baby
8. Demonstrates competencies in technical skills: assisting infant to latch, positioning infant and mother, care of the breast and storage of breast milk, use of the breast pump
9. Acts as a resource for the Department on breastfeeding issues
10. Prioritizes and organizes work effectively within assigned shift.
11. Maintains patient safety through utilization of the infant identification process and infant security system
12. Utilizes principles of Team Effectiveness and commitment to coworkers
Communication
1. Uses effective communication during hand offs
2. Communicates patient care information to the interdisciplinary team
3. Provides education in a manner that is understood
gives real-time feedback to staff
4. Returns calls to Lactation warm line in timely manner
Documentation
1. Documentation reflects patient status
2. Documents patient teaching on the teaching record
3. Documents infant feeding on breastfeeding assessment
Professional Role Development
1. Develops own lactation knowledge via practice, observation, professional literature, networking and attending continuing education programs
2. Promotes best practice by demonstrating a commitment to quality patient care
3. Serves as a preceptor and mentor for new employees
4. Mentors student nurses
5. Accepts constructive feedback about performance and shows evidence of change
Department of Nursing and Organization Support
1. Attends assigned committee meetings and contributes to the committees
2. Communicates support of organizational values and strategies
3. Supports the following Organizational programs: Magnet, Hospital of Distinction, Baby-Friendly Designated Hospital, Nursing Councils
4. Maintains good attendance/lateness standards in accordance with hospital policy
Departmental Support
1. Maintains breast pumps in working order
oversees Loaner pump program
2. Attends staff meetings on a regular basis
3. Keeps patient care area and work environment neat and organized
4. Serves as a Baby-Friendly educator and skills examiner
Credentials:
- Intnl Brd Cert Lactation Cnslt (Required)
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
- Registered Nurse - PA (Required)
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)
- Education Specialization:
Nursing
Equivalent Experience
- 5+ years Inpatient lactation or inpatient maternal child RN experience
