The Director of Perioperative Support Services will oversee all aspects of the Central Processing Department at both PMUC and PPMC locations and Anesthesia Support Services. Primary responsibilities will be to manage all materials and resources for both departments. The expected outcome of performing these duties will result in leading the employees of the Central Processing Department and Anesthesia Support Services to provide quality patient care and create an environment conducive to staff growth and development, and satisfaction. The Director will also be administratively responsible for managing the hospital Central Processing materials budget and promote fiscal responsibility by identifying cost savings opportunities through utilization awareness, capital acquisitions and communicating outward to stakeholders.
Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:
• Administration of Staff Development of Central Processing and Anesthesia Support Services
• Directs department educator to identify learning needs of the staff and develops programs to meet those needs.
• Ensures appropriate orientation, training and continuing education for CPD personnel and Anesthesia support.
• Monitors staff attendance to educational programs including annual education requirements and maintenance of required
certifications.
• Conducts annual reviews of the policy and procedure manual as well as immediate review of any new or updated policy.
• Schedules and/or delivers in-services on any new or upgraded technology and supplies adopted for use with in the
operating room.
• Encourages staff attendance to conferences and professional association meetings.
• Provides semi-annual reviews of the standards established by the regulatory agencies.
• Coordinates in-service programs for the surgical staff on all new technology to be used in the operating room.
• Plans and directs all activities of the department.
• Develops and implements cost effective initiatives for reporting departments as well as other areas related to supply
distribution when appropriate.
• Prepares annual operating and capital budgets for reporting accounting units and evaluates the fiscal responsibility of
reporting staff.
• Ensures appropriate decontamination of all equipment.
• Reports all issues of price negotiation, inventory usage, inventory control and system issues within 24 hours of
identification.
• Maintains a keen awareness of trends and new technologies in the marketplace.
• Management of Central Processing Department and Anesthesia Support Services
• Provides leadership and direction of personnel in accordance with the organizational and departmental mission, goals and
objectives.
• Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with surgery and medical staff, peers, the administrative staff and the direct
report employees of the hospital.
• In collaboration with the OR Operations Committee and hospital administrative staff, develops unit goals for the Central
Processing Department and Anesthesia Support Services, which are consistent with strategic planning initiatives.
• Assumes the total twenty-four (24) hour per day responsibility for the care of the staff.
• Conducts rounds within the OR on a daily basis.
• Communicates with the surgical staff and other departments to effectively solve problems and optimize delivery of
quality care.
• Desponds to OR and Anesthesia needs to promote the total patient care concept.
• Collaborates with other departments to ensure appropriate professional standards are consistently applied, e.g., OSHA,
JCAHO, HIPAA, CDC, etc.
• Financial Management
Accountabilities
• Divisional Budgeting and Operating Planning Analysis – Leads the division in the development and implementation of
capital and operating budgets using system wide standards and processes.
• Partners with Associate Executive Director of Perioperative Services in developing performance targets, reporting
variances and creating remediation plans.
• Divisional Financial Planning, Analysis and Decision Support – Partner with Associate Executive Director of Perioperative
Services and CFO to provide financial planning and analysis.
• Materials Management – Ensure divisional practices are in alignment with UPHS supply chain management strategy.
• Operational Management
• Establishes Standards of Practice for the Department in collaboration with the OR Operations Committee.
• Articulates and supports PPMC and Departmental goals and philosophies to all personnel.
• Promotes evidence-based research initiatives with specialist and establish policies and standards of practice for the
department.
• Implements quality monitoring and improvement activities and shares the results with the staff.
• Inspect equipment and environment on a regular basis for needed repairs and safety, reports any hazards for corrections
and establishes a “tickler” follow-up system to review performance of equipment that is utilized with in the operating
room.
• Promotes and maintains a clean environment, in cooperation with the materials management personnel.
• Maintains an adequate level of needed supplies, in cooperation with the environmental/facility services personnel.
• Provides an environment, which is conducive to learning of students of all disciplines.
• Operates within the department the expected budgetary guidelines. Analyzes, interprets and reports budgetary
discrepancies and implements changes to correct discrepancies.
• Develops and implements programs which support positive patient outcomes.
• Develops and sustains an environment with the designated area(s) through implementation of strategies and continuous
quality improvement programs that support excellence in patient care through interdisciplinary collaboration.
• Directs staff in designated areas in providing accurate and quality output to the service areas.
• Acts as a vital link between the hospital departments and designated patient care areas.
• Prepares a budget including FTE and expense allocation as well as capital recommendations, which support unit and
departmental goals.
• Directs/supervises adjustments of department resources, budget allocations and variances based upon analysis of fiscal
and benchmark data.
• Develops, reviews and implements policies and procedures for all functions of CPD including but not limited to quality
control, aseptic technique, biological monitoring and sterilization.
• Management of Personnel
• Maintains effective communication with all PPMC personnel.
• Oversees the recruitment and selection of new hires.
• Conducts regular staff meetings to include participation of staff working all shift including day, evening, night and
weekend shifts. Completes documentation of the contents of these meetings as well as a sign-in sheet of those in
attendance and maintains the original in the department files.
• Schedules personnel in a manner, which provides for the identified operating room needs and is within the designated
budgetary guidelines. Analyzes staffing requirements and adjust as required to maximize efficiency.
• Evaluates and counsels' employees in a manner which corrects problems and promotes profession and personal growth of
staff members.
• Processes bi-weekly payroll to ensures that all employees are paid accurately and timely.
• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
• Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in healthcare or related field with 5-7+ years management experience required
14 years management experience and a high school diploma or equivalent level of education
will be considered in lieu of educational requirements with a minimum of eight (8) clinical years' experience required
preferably in a Perioperative setting
Certified Registered Central Service Technician CRST required within one year of hire
