MedicalAssistantsarecross-trainedtoperformadministrativeandclinicalduties.From
greetingpatientsandperformingavarietyofpatientcenteredtasks,toguidingthepatient
throughthemedicalappointment,medicalassistantsarecrucialandvaluedmembersofthe
healthcareteam.While hired to work with a specific medical provider, the MA may be
asked to work with an alternate medical provider, within the practice, in any one of our
facilities, as deemed necessary by Administration.
ResponsibilitiesandDuties
Administrative Duties(may include, but not limited too):
•Using computer applications
•Answering telephones
•Greeting Patients
•Updating and filing patient electronic medical records(EMR)
•Coding and filling out insurance forms
•Assisting with and scheduling appointments
•Arranging for hospital admissions, surgical admissions, imaging services and laboratory
services
•Handling various correspondence
Clinical Duties(may include, but not limited too):
•Performing initial patient intake to include taking vitals, reasons for appointment,
symptoms and initial medical history(all to be entered in theEMR)
•Obtaining the patient’s current list of medications (to be entered in the EMR)
•Preparing patients for examination (aka; “rooming patients”)
•Explaining treatment procedures to patients
•Assisting the physician (MD) or physician assistant (PA) during examsand minor
surgical procedures
•Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens
•Preparing surgery forms and transmitting completed forms to surgery
center/hospital
•Performing basic laboratory tests
•Instructing patients about medication and special diets
•Preparing and administering medications as directed by a MD or PA
•Transmitting prescription refills as directed
•Preparing equipment and instruments for patient in office procedures
•Preparing examination rooms
•Cleaning examination rooms, equipment, and instruments
•Ordering supplies
•Reporting medical results to patients as directed by MD or PA
•Documenting all duties related to patient care in patient’s EMR
•Patient Liaison:Medical assistants are instrumental in helping patients feel at ease in
the physician’s office and often explain the physician’s instructions.
Qualifications
•Education level.High School Graduate or GED. Medical Assistant Education &/orMA
certificationpreferred.
•MA Experience preferred but not required
•Specific skills: team-oriented, leadership, good verbal and writtencommunication, strong
customerrelations, computer literate, familiarwiththe electronic medical record
(preferred), knowledge of medical terminology(preferred), good organizational skills.
