Summary:
The Penn Medicine Corporate Department of Nursing Professional Development provides education, training, and professional development programs for nurses across the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS). The team designs and delivers programs, including new-hire nurse orientation, nurse residency programs, and continuing education sessions, to ensure that all UPHS nurses deliver care at the same high standard and have opportunities for professional growth with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes.
The Nursing Professional Development Specialist (NPDS) assesses the nursing staff’s learning needs, designs curricula, leads program delivery, and evaluates learning outcomes. They work to uphold research and evidence-based practice standards in support of high-quality patient care delivery and comprehensive individualized patient-and-family centered care. The Nursing Professional Development Specialist (NPDS) reports to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) for Nursing Professional Development.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct periodic assessment of community engagement needs at least every year and provide recommendations for future program advancement based on assessment and data analysis
- Develop and execute education and professional development activities for nurses at all levels within the organization on fundamentals of community engagement and partnership
- Engage nurses at all levels in programmatic, strategic community engagement activities to improve the overall health and wellbeing of our community
- Gather and assess data to support the ongoing progress of nursing community engagement programs
- Collaborate with the Penn Medicine Office of Government Affairs, and other Penn Medicine entities to identify the HUP nursing contribution in addressing the Community Health Needs Assessment.
- Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing (SON) and partner to co-lead community initiatives
- Partner with University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing to facilitate student community course experiences
- Partner with Community Leaders and Organizations as needed
- Evaluate factors such as safety, effectiveness, availability, costs and benefits for learners and for the community
- Ensure HUP nursing representation and bidirectional communication in local, regional, and national professional organizations that address community engagement
- Lead HUP CPR instructor led courses and develop and maintain a 3 pronged CPR initiative focusing on HUP Employees, Patients/Families and Community Members
- Proactively ensure that work aligns with ANCC Magnet Requirements and can be used to fulfill relevant Magnet Standards.
Credentials:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
- Registered Nurse - PA (Required)
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- Master's Degree Nursing from an accredited school of nursing (Required)
- And 3-5 years of relevant Nursing Community Engagement Activities
Education Specialization: Nursing, from an accredited school of Nursing (Required)
