Penn Medicine is seeking a full-time, day shift Pharmacy Education Specialist for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP).
Summary:
This position is responsible for developing and delivering comprehensive pharmacy training and education to technical staff using educational techniques including, but not limited to the six categories of Bloom's Taxonomy. Oversees the initial training and maintenance educational programs for the department and coordinates onboarding of new technical employees. Serves as the pharmacy administrator and liaison for the electronic learning platform and partners with external stakeholders on developing, publishing, assigning and reporting on eLearning activities. Compiles, organizes, analyzes outcomes and quality data and uses this information for improvement plans and formulating educational programs. This position is dedicated to ensuring quality patient-related and operational outcomes, the avoidance of errors and completeness of required training documentation utilizing evidence-based practice standards. Maintains a thorough operational understanding of the electronic health record, pharmacy automation, medication use system and general pharmacy practices. Ensures targeted staff are thoroughly trained and maintain appropriate documentation of competencies with the guidelines set forth by various industry standards and regulations including, but not limited to Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy, USP <795>, <797>, and <800>, the Joint Commission, FDA, and OSHA. Assists leadership in maintaining employee education and learning files. Stays up to date on emerging trends in pharmacy technician practices and identifies opportunities to implement innovative practices, educational techniques and new technology. Performs various other training duties related to pharmacy and patient care as necessary and will also provide cross functional support for the inpatient pharmacy dependent upon operational need.
Responsibilities:
-Leads the development and maintenance of an overarching department training and education strategy. -Develops, implements and evaluates programs in collaboration with pharmacy leadership and other key stakeholders including but not limited to: orientation, required annual, continuous competence assessment, continuing education and vendor in-services.-Assists pharmacy leadership team with pharmacist competency assessment and documentation as directed. -Provides evidence of outcomes achieved.-A strategic thinker possessing strong pharmacy acumen and has a good grasp of how the training process directly affects patient care and operations.-Implements learning interventions to address new processes.-Maintains current knowledge in the relative areas to address the constant changes, competency and performance gaps, and evaluate and recommend viable and sustainable solutions.-Serves as the Pharmacy Department LMS Administrator -Utilizes evidenced-based educational strategies including, but not limited to Blooms Taxonomy, Training Within Industry, and the Toyota Management System. -Uses effective interpersonal skills in all interactions – teaches. Demonstrates the ability to adapt educational goal(s) to the learning audience to ensure success.-Provides timely communication to staff regarding training plans, instructions, and training questions. -Serves as a liaison between Pharmacy Department and Knowledge Link Administrators for other HUP entities and departments.-Participates in multidisciplinary training efforts under the Clinical Operations team.-Communicates with pharmacy leadership regarding changes in training implementation, expectations, regulations, and other support items-Communicates with department preceptors/trainers regarding training plans, new trainees, and evaluations of new trainees-Communicates with pharmacy leadership about the progress of trainees -Collaborates with pharmacy leadership to standardized messaging and training for all employees-Facilitate the departmental onboarding and training of new hires for all inpatient pharmacy technicians and interns.-Develops training plans, which includes scheduling with appropriate trainers, documentation within scheduling software, and communication between all parties. -Delivers training on specific pharmacy functions and technology new all new staff. -Supports Pharmacy Department in the creation of online education and competency courses-Assist in training all pharmacy staff in newly adopted equipment, policies and procedures related to medication distribution.-Assists with coordination of annual/biennial sterile and hazardous compounding competencies for all pharmacy staff.-Plans all learning program’s implementation and organize required resources-Identifies problem areas as they relate to educational requirements based on observation, input from the pharmacy leadership team, key stakeholders, etc.-Analyzes medication errors, workflow challenges, QA information to assure that training/knowledge gaps are addressed appropriately with proper follow up and re-education of staff members.-Provides feedback/input to pharmacy leadership on employee evaluations for the purpose of staff competency.-Supports pharmacy leadership in the creation of SOP’s, workflow changes, training documents.-Manages creation and implementation of online education and competency courses.-Completes reporting with the LMS system as needed for pharmacy leadership.-Works with pharmacy leadership to create and provide support for programs geared towards professional development of staff.-Works with pharmacy leadership to maintain regulatory compliance for education before, during and after surveys and audits by accrediting and regulatory agencies. -Maintains functional competency as a pharmacy technician in all areas of the department.-Maintains Knowledge Link Administrator competencies as well as Rise or other LMS systems as appropriate-Maintains up to date information regarding Pharmacy regulations and guidelines, particularly <797> and <800>-Maintains completed documents of all training and recertification competencies in an organized and clear fashion, presentable to other departmental staff and/or regulatory agencies when needed. -Works with pharmacy leadership to identify necessary documentation for all employees, supports in the creation of documentation, and the appropriate methods to documents.-Works with pharmacy leadership to standardize the documentation for training.Credentials:
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (Required)
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
- And 3+ years related experience in education, training, pharmacy (required)
- Bachelor of Arts or Science (preferred)
- College level classes in Education (preferred)
- Prior experience in training or teaching Pharmacy personnel (preferred)
