SUMMARY (BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB)
Evaluates, purchases, tests, installs and maintains hardware and software for the enterprise-wide network infrastructure. Ensures optimal performance of organization's integrated and state-of-the-art system network. Ensures they are completed in a successful and timely manner. Resolves problems effectively and efficiently and ensures minimal supervision required. Keeps disruptions and unplanned downtime to a minimum. Communicates with team members, other IS professional staff, IS management, users, and vendors. Ensures successful and cooperative completion of tasks and projects and resolves problems in a timely manner.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent technical degree.
Experience: Five years previous experience with routers and switches, DNS and DHCP, TCP/IP and IPX protocols, cabling systems, firewall, UPS systems and SNMP.
Other Credentials:
Knowledge and Skills: Strong oral and written communication, project management, troubleshooting, and personnel management skills. Strong skills in working with desktop devices and operating systems.
Special Training: Network design, routers and switches, DNS & DHCP, ATM switch configurations, network management, and electrical theory. Wireless technology and advanced technical writing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Exhibits strong technical knowledge and expertise in ensuring optimal support for the enterprise-wide network infrastructure, WAN/LAN topologies, network protocols, communication subsystems and programs. Maintains network security. Uses intrusion detection systems, firewall, access control lists, and a definitive understanding of organization's security policies and procedures. Stays abreast of security and software bugs and expediently implements patches to fix them.
- Ensures optimal support for the other critical network infrastructure components. Demonstrates technical knowledge and experience with current and emerging technologies. Exhibits very strong technical knowledge and expertise in designing new networks.
- Monitors assigned network infrastructure components as evidenced by proficient use of monitoring tools and formally submitted network performance reports. Ensures that regularly scheduled performance maintenance and upgrades for network infrastructure components are completed in a timely and accurate fashion.
- Develops logical and detail-oriented project plans and estimates resources, implementation timeframe, cost and benefit analyses. Presents formally project plans to management. Develops and maintains proficient use of project management software and tools. Plans and tracks purchase orders for hardware and software. Understands and adheres to project implementation and problem resolution priorities set by networks and IS management. Keeps performance reports on open and closed task tickets as well as project implementation and problem resolution outcomes.
- Leads in identifying, evaluating, and testing potential new software, hardware, tools, and technologies. Exercises discretion and judgement when making formal recommendations to management for purchase. Recommends these formally and submits results to ensure new hardware and software are adequate for projected growth.
- Leads and participates as an active and contributing member of project teams. Plans and documents project meeting agendas, minutes, status reports, and project outcomes.
- Utilizes technical knowledge and experience to effectively and efficiently analyze issues, diagnose problems, and determine resolutions. Escalates problems in a timely manner to the director, technical services, or other on-call and management staff and vendors as necessary. Documents all problem-solving measures. Allows for other team members to resolve recurring problems effectively and efficiently.
- Demonstrates preventive maintenance capabilities through sound implementation procedures.
- Communicates and follows up in a positive and meaningful manner with customers. Keeps users up to date on status of problems and projects and proper procedures for systems evaluations. Develops alternatives to requests for services that do not meet established standards.
- Communicates on a regular basis the status on problem resolutions and project implementations to the other IS staff, IS management, and users as necessary. Communicates problems and resolution status to vendors in a timely and professional manner.
- Documents policies, procedures, standards, and methodologies necessary for the proper use and maintenance of all components of the enterprise-wide network infrastructure.
- Leads and participates as an active and contributing member in regular technical services staff meetings and other assigned team project meetings.
