Summary:
- Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the Financial Assistance Pharmacy Technician is responsible for completing necessary functions to ensure patient access, adherence and reimbursement for high-cost medications. Responsibilities include investing patient insurance and benefits, completing prior authorization requests, pre-screening patients for viable payment sources and coordinating financial assistance through patient assistance programs (PAPs), navigating reimbursement issues for patients, and tracking prescription status approvals, all while ensuring regulatory compliance. The technician will coordinate directly with healthcare professionals, patients, and external agencies (e.g. manufacturers) and follow up on authorization and insurance issues as needed. Technicians will also provide cross-coverage to the rest of Penn Specialty Pharmacy as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Support prescription intake process, including verification of insurance coverage, and assist with the prior authorization and appeals process
- Conduct financial assistance investigation, and collaborate with third parties (manufacturers, payers, grant foundations) to improve patient access. Assist clinical pharmacists with preparing documentation showing medical necessity
- Work with patient and/or caretakers to ensure proper documentation of the process flow from prescription initiation through completion, and provide timely updates to physicians, pharmacies, patients, and manufacturers regarding prescription status
- Partner with pharmacists, physicians and clinic staff to enhance clinical workflow and patient care by preventing therapy interruptions

- Facilitate adherence by ensuring patients receive medications in timely manner
- make calls to patients, prescribers and clinical staff to obtain necessary documentation. Document and triage problems with financial assistance and access to therapy
Credentials:
- CPhT- Certified Pharmacy Tech (Required)
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
- 2+ years' experience in a community-based retail or hospital outpatient pharmacy environment or a financial coordinator required.
- 5+ years of financial assistance support in ambulatory services setting preferred.
