Summary:
- The Emergency Department Clinical Documentation & Coding Liaison serves as the primary expert in clinical documentation improvement, coding education, and communication between providers and the Central Fee Abstraction team. This role proactively analyzes documentation and coding trends to identify gaps, patterns, and opportunities for improvement, transforming data into actionable insights. Using these findings, the Liaison develops and delivers targeted education to physicians and advanced practice providers, ensuring compliance with evolving coding standards and promoting consistent, accurate billing practices. By monitoring regulatory changes and reimbursement policies, the Liaison supports optimal documentation quality and professional reimbursement across the Emergency Department.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze Emergency Department documentation, coding, and reimbursement trends to identify gaps, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
- Develop and deliver targeted, data-driven education and feedback to physicians and advanced practice providers on documentation and coding best practices.
- Create, maintain, and optimize clinical documentation templates to support accurate, complete, and compliant charting.
- Serve as the primary liaison between Emergency Department providers and the Central Fee Abstraction team to ensure consistent communication and alignment.
- Monitor and interpret changes in coding regulations, reimbursement policies, and compliance standards, translating them into actionable guidance for providers.
- Act as a trusted resource and consultant for physicians and advanced practice providers regarding documentation and coding questions.
- Track and report the impact of educational interventions and documentation improvement efforts on departmental outcomes.
- Act as a subject-matter expert on clinical documentation improvement (CDI) and professional fee/hospital coding within the Emergency Department.
- Escalate issues to the Director, Revenue Cycle Management as appropriate.
Credentials:
- Certified Professional Coder (Required)
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
- Bachelor of Arts or Science
