Job Overview:
The Acute Care Family Support Specialist functions as a care partner with the PESS staff to provide on-site support to the family while their loved one is being assessed in the emergency screening unit. Specifically, the ACFS Specialist will provide education on the screening process and State of New Jersey Commitment Law, and execute linkage to existing family support resources in the community. Also, responsible for follow-up to families and maintenance of statistical data reports related to family services. Utilizes a proactive approach to evaluate services, safety issues, and gaps in the system which may have a negative impact on the opinion of patients, their families and all others who utilize the services of MMC. Recommends changes to enhance satisfaction and assure that the intervention was successful.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree preferred
- Experience in Mental Health Advocacy and knowledge of the New Jersey Community Mental Health System
- Annual BEST certifications
- BLS through the American Heart Association
- Must possess the ability to work in stressful situations
- Must possess and maintain a valid NJ State Driver's License

Essential Functions:
- Demonstrates an ability to communicate well and professionally with off-site facilities, including Mental Health Association, NAMI-Greater Monmouth, Affiliated Emergency Services and other facilities.
- Demonstrates the ability to improve a recovery-oriented service system response in families in order to promote wellness, an improved quality of life and true community inclusion, especially for families not currently involved in family support programs.
- Demonstrates the ability to reduce stress on families in emergency screening services by providing them with information and support they need to better cope with their immediate crisis.
- Documents accurately, timely and legibly on appropriate forms according to hospital policy and established standards.
- Maintains ongoing observation of families in the Emergency Service (ES) throughout the shift and reports any concerns to the licensed staff member responsible.
- Promotes the patient and loved one's participation in the treatment plan toward wellness and recovery.
- Provides education to PESS / Emergency crisis staff to sensitize them to collaborating with the patient’s family.
- Provides educational presentations through the Mental Health Association and other community agencies to families regarding the emergency screening process, screening law, screening services, communication with emergency crisis staff, and coping mechanisms.
- Provides emotional support to highly stressed families.
- Provides telephone follow-up to families to ensure linkage to community family support services, particularly those families presenting to the ES off hours and/or when the ACFS Specialist is not available.
- Utilizes good communication and observation skills to assist families in a crisis in the emergency department setting.
- When no families are in the emergency department and deemed appropriate, they will provide outreach services with a screener to engage families of the mentally ill patient under assessment by the certified screener.
- Utilizes a proactive approach to evaluate services, safety issues, and gaps in the system which may have a negative impact on the opinion of patients, their families and all others who utilize the services of MMC.
- Recommends changes to enhance satisfaction and assure that the intervention was successful.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the department.
