Program Overview: The Music Therapist is an established health care professional utilizing music as a formal intervention within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of patients. The Music Therapist uses clinical and evidence-based assessments and music interventions to accomplish individualized goals in conjunction with the patient’s age, medical condition, and family/significant others. Interventions are designed specifically to assist patients and families in coping with the stress and trauma that is often associated with a hospitalization.
Position Summary: The therapist will be responsible for developing and facilitating individualized and group music therapy sessions for children. The role involves working closely with children, families, and other professionals to help patients manage pain and stressful situations, encouraging self-expression, and promoting communication, motor development, and socialization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement individualized and group music therapy programs tailored to the developmental and emotional needs of children.
- Assess children’s physical, emotional, and cognitive needs to inform treatment planning and therapeutic interventions.
- Foster a safe, nurturing, and creative environment where children feel free to express themselves through music.
- Work collaboratively with families, teachers, and other healthcare professionals to track progress and provide integrated care.
- Monitor and document each child’s progress, adjusting therapeutic approaches as needed.
- Provide education and resources to families regarding the benefits of music therapy and how they can support their child's development at home.
- Lead individual and group sessions that include elements of creative, improvisation, and structured music exercises.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines in all professional interactions and documentation.
- Provides staff education about the role of music therapy and patient care.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy, Music, or a related field and/or completion of the degree equivalency program in Music Therapy as required by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) required.
- A minimum of one year of Experience working with children in a healthcare/ professional setting required.
- Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) with in 6 months of hire.
- NICU Certificate (NICU-MT) Preferred.
- Basic Life Support by American Red Cross or American Heart Association required.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills required.
