Overview
A psych nurse, or psychiatric nurse, is a registered nurse who specializes in mental healthcare for patients of all ages with mental illnesses. The purpose of the Psych Nurse is to promote mental health and provide care through assessments, counseling, medication administration, crisis intervention, and by collaborating with a treatment team to develop recovery plans.
The Registered Nurse is a clinically competent nursing professional with expertise in the assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation and evaluation of actual potential responses to human disease and illness. The Registered Nurse achieves these objectives by engaging in a variety of direct patient/family care activities. The Registered Nurse must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Age groups may include neonate through adult/geriatric but will vary according to the specific assignment.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate problem solving skills through application of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation) on an assigned unit.
- Demonstrate competence in clinical practice through the provision of total patient care.
- Demonstrate leadership skills by contributing to a positive and collaborative patient care environment.
- Enact the Registered Nurse role in a manner that promotes professional growth and development.
- Demonstrate a commitment to quality patient care through participation in unit and departmental quality improvement activities.
- Assume the role of patient advocate through the upholding of patients' legal, ethical, and moral rights.
- Ensuring that care delivered is specific to the age, growth and development of neonates, pediatric, and adult/geriatric patients as required.
- Participates in all medical center performance improvement activities and will practice and demonstrate the principles of CQI in daily work assignments.
- Performs responsibilities with a deep commitment to human dignity, respect, and basic human rights; and expands this commitment to all working relationships with patients, visitors and fellow employees.
