A Little More About What You Will be Doing
The Clinical Nurse IV, Oncology (CNIV), is an expert clinician who demonstrates a high level of knowledge and expertise in a specialty as well as general nursing. The CN IV consistently demonstrates excellence in all areas of nursing practice including nursing care delivery, staff education, research, and collaboration. The CNIV manages complex, unpredictable patient care situations and is a nursing shift leader. Serves as a clinical and operational resource to the nursing staff, the unit, the organization, and the community to promote the advancement of nursing.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinates shift operations; assigns and monitors meal periods, rest breaks, and tardiness on a shift by shift basis; When in charge, oversees and authorizes incidental overtime; Provides assistance to co-workers, new staff, temporary staff and students.
- Delegates and assigns tasks to licensed and unlicensed health care workers within the scope of their job responsibilities
- Coaches and supports nursing staff in the application of advanced clinical skills and critical thinking to support Oncology patient care activities
- Evaluates, facilitates and promotes patient flow, coordinates discharge planning and team rounding as applicable.
- Assumes responsibility for mentoring, coaching and staff development, acts as change champion; Contributes to performance evaluations.
- Champions department improvement activities.
- Leads and/or actively participates and supports as a Preceptor, Mentor, Project participation and participation in community service activities.
- Participates in the completion of required skill and competencies
- Assists with strategic planning; participates in activities related to recruitment and retention
- Performs skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy and the initiation of peripheral venous access
- Evaluates and works to improve the process of patient care delivery within the unit and service centers
- Provides advanced assessment skills, integrating appropriate data sources to assess the signs, symptoms, reactions, behaviors, or general appearance to determine normal versus abnormal characteristics
- Provides expert comprehensive direct and indirect care to the specific populations needs, including cultural, spiritual, age, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, education, family and condition needs
- Identifies and assesses patient safety concerns with respect to age and developmental considerations. Intervenes to provide a safe environment and evaluates effectiveness of intervention for patient
- Establish IV access utilizing peripheral or central catheters per protocol. Drug should only be prepared once an IV access is established and labs verified. Administer IV therapy as ordered by MD
Education
- Associate's Degree in Nursing required
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred
Work Experience
- 4 years RN Experience in oncology specialty area required
- 1 year For Imaging/Interventional Radiology: experience in Imaging/Interventional Radiology required
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid CA RN license required
- BLS Certification required
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) required
