ResponsibilitiesRespiratory Therapists (RT's) are responsible for administering a variety of pulmonary diagnostic tests, therapeutic procedures, and patient educational activities. RT's are responsible for quality assurance of the testing equipment, test performance, and monitoring the patients' physiologic response during testing. The therapists provide education regarding the disease process, medication review, oxygen therapy, breathing techniques, and exercise techniques to patients with lung disease using appropriate tools that meet the learning needs of the patient. RT's are responsible for maintaining a safe testing and exercise environment for the patient.
QualificationsA graduate of an American Medical Association (AMA) accredited respiratory therapy program with a minimum of an Associate Degree.
Additional Qualifications:
- Incumbent functions independently according to established guidelines.
- Decision-making and good communication skills are required when working with individual patients.
- Must have good human relation skills as 70-80% of the time is spent in patient care.
- Prior experience is desirable.
License/Certifications:
- All respiratory therapists will hold the National Board for Respiratory Care entry level certification (CRT) prior to their first day of Mayo employment.
- Current Minnesota Respiratory Therapist license (LRT) required or must be obtained within four (4) months of date of hire.
- The Registered Respiratory Therapist credential is required upon hire or by the end of one year of employment and must be maintained throughout employment.
- New graduates who have been unable to secure their license prior to the first day of employment will agree to work within a role comparable to a student Respiratory Therapist.
- They will be accompanied at all times by a Licensed Respiratory Therapist in the presence of patients.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or equivalent determined by site is required.
- Additional life support certifications may be required by site of hire.
