Summary of Position:
The Division of Academic General Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM) is recruiting two Newborn Nursery Nurse Practitioners to join our division and team at the Jack D. Weiler Hospital. The Weiler Newborn Nursery (PNP or FNP) maintains standards of the practice for nursing as defined by the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics, Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice and Nursing's Social Policy Statement.
Job Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and provide comprehensive postnatal care to clinically stable late-term and term newborn infants including performing complete medical history, physical exam, and psychosocial assessment, diagnosis, and management
- Monitor vital signs, feeding and infant’s overall clinical status and escalate care as indicated.
- Stabilize and provide infants who are ill and require transfer to a higher level of care as clinically indicated to ensure optimal care of the newborn
- Order customary laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies per practice protocols, differentiates between normal/abnormal findings, and follows protocols for abnormal findings, which may include referral to consulting physicians per customary pattern of the attending MD or with the collaborating physicians.
- Formulate the care plan, along with the family/caregiver, attending physician, and nursing team and other team members based on expected goals of care and length of stay
- Prescribe in-patient and discharge medications according to New York State law, including controlled substances with DEA authorization.
- Provide family education, support, and anticipatory guidance about newborn care, feeding techniques, developmental milestones and potential health concerns that may arise after discharge
- Effectively coordinate care with nursery staff, specialty services, ambulatory primary care team, other health care professionals and community resources as indicated from admission to discharge.
- Promotes family centered care and participates in interdisciplinary daily rounds with unit staff including nurses, unit clerks, attending physicians, mid-level practitioners and residents.
- Depending on department and training, performs therapeutic and diagnostic procedures (e.g., venipuncture, circumcision)
- Participates in teaching of residents, medical students, nurse practitioner students and physician assistant students.
- Participate in quality/performance improvement initiatives and educational activities and maintain professional practice standards and clinical expertise.
- Assists in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of research protocols when applicable.
- Participate in unit, division and departmental meetings and continuing education activities.
- Performs related duties & responsibilities as determined by patient or practice needs and as required by delineation of privileges, in accordance with legal scope of practice and departmental protocols.
- Participate in designated activities related to advanced practice professional standards and regulations of relevant outside agencies.
Schedule
- The schedule consists of four 10-hour shifts per week which includes 1 weekend shift per month.
- 7am-5:30pm x 3 days per week and 7am -5pm one day per week
- 12 weekends per year
- 2 Hospital holidays per year
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
Required Criteria:
- Master of Science degree in Nursing
- 2 to 3 years clinical experience as an NP in a related specialty (Nursery or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), pediatric primary care, etc.)
Preferred Criteria:
- Post master’s degree certification in specialty as a nurse practitioner preferred.
- National certification in nurse practitioner specialty (i.e. American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB), preferred
- Preferred to have over 3,600 hours of qualifying NP experience
- Bilingual speakers preferred
- Certified Lactation Counselor preferred

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Current New York State Registered Nurse Practitioner (NP) license and current NP registration
- New York State Registered Professional Nurse license and current RN registration
- Applicable National Board Certification (such as ANCC, PNCB, etc.)
- Current Basic Life Support certification (BLS/must be issued by American Heart Association)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- Infection Control Certificate
- Current Drug Enforcement Authority (DEA) registration certificate
