Job: Senior Laboratory Assistant
Hours: Full Time, 7am - 3:30pm. every 4th weekend
Location: Lancaster, PA

POSITION SUMMARY:
As outlined in the Essential Functions, duties vary by assigned area. Duties may include: performing waived and moderately complex test procedures, supporting Quality Control and documentation, resulting newborn screens and data entering the resulting, function verification, instrument maintenance, associated specimen collection and clerical work. Patient care includes care to patients in the following age groups: neonatal ( birth to 30 days), pediatric ( 30 days through 12 years), adolescent ( 13 through 18 years), adult ( 19 through 64 years), and geriatric ( 65 years and above).

Laboratory Technician duties fall into one of the following categories/areas:
- Micro Immunology-Allergy Testing;
- Reference Testing (Send-outs); or
- Point of Care Testing.

- Micro Immunology-Allergy Testing:
- Performs waived and moderately complex test procedures.
- Performs and documents Quality Control. Verifies functioning of instruments.
- Performs initial evaluation and handling of incoming specimens: separation, centrifugation and preservation procedures: sorts and organizes specimen batches.
- Organize, labels and numbers specimen, worksheets and appropriate test materials in test set up.
- Measures and dispenses specimens and reagents in test system.
- Calls, results and documents “critical” values.
- Monitors manual functions of test system and instruments to assure accuracy and precision; performs and runs standards, patient samples, programmed controls through automated or manual protocols.
- Records and evaluates programmed quality control results according to established control limits; follows corrective action procedures for out of control situations.
- Accurately enters test results and related data into Laboratory and other computer systems.
- Reports and monitors test results in computer systems, troubleshooting when necessary.
- Performs routine scheduled maintenance, cleaning and decontamination of instruments, equipment and work area not cleaned by Environmental Services personnel.
- Advise locations on specimen collection requirements.
- Exhibits appropriate professionalism and work ethic in accordance with Experience Standards.

- Reference Testing Send-outs :
- Performs initial evaluation and handling of incoming specimens: separation, centrifugation and preservation procedures: sorts and organizes specimen batches.

- Performs Hazardous Shipping packaging.
- Advise locations on specimen collection requirements.
- Research testing done outside of the organization. Give guidance on specimen collection and transportation.
- Exhibits appropriate professionalism and work ethic in accordance with Experience Standards.
- OR:
- Point of Care Testing:
- Checks Quality Control logs for frequency compliance. Verifies functioning of instruments.
- Monitors manual functions of test system and instruments to assure accuracy and precision; performs and runs standards, patient samples, programmed controls through automated or manual protocols.
- Records and evaluates programmed quality control results according to established control limits; follows corrective action procedures for out of control situations.
- Resulting newborn screens and data enters the resulting.
- Accurately enters test results and related data into Laboratory and other computer systems.
- Performs routine scheduled maintenance, cleaning and decontamination of instruments, equipment and work area not cleaned by Environmental Services personnel.
- Exhibits appropriate professionalism and work ethic in accordance with Experience Standards.
- OR:
- Blood Bank:
- Performs Blood product quality control testing.
- Performs Blood product manufacturing and modifications.
- Organize and create component processing worksheets in lab computer system.
- Performs Equipment maintenance and quality control.
- Manage blood inventory; receive and return blood products.
- Answer telephone and triage phone calls as needed.
- Exhibits appropriate professionalism and work ethic in accordance with Experience Standards.

- The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above
- Answers telephone, takes requests for collection information, calls reports to nursing stations and doctors offices.
- Reports outdating reagent supplies, replenishes and rotates lab stock of consumable materials. Logs incoming supplies.
- Accepts assignment to weekend and holiday rotation to maintain workflow as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
- Minimum Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- For Reference Testing Send-outs role, certification in Hazardous Shipping packaging required within six 6 months of placement in position.
- Six 6 months employment in healthcare setting.
- Six 6 months receptionist clerical data entry in healthcare setting with medical terminology and computer experience.
- Ability to perform tasks using Microsoft windows, Word, Excel and other applicable computer programs.
