The PCS Account Specialist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Abstracts accounts for financial processes within Patient Care Services. Ensures total charge capture, monitors documentation/charge trends, handles edit requests, documentation QA, assists care coordination with correction of patient type and accommodation codes, and performs charge correction for observation patients.

- Ensures correct total charge posting/capture on the nursing units for the Observation patients.
- Reviews OBV discharges daily. Assists with corrections to observation hours. Remains compliant with Medicare billing by removing double charging of observation hours.
- Handles edit requests from Coders.
- Develops charge master updates in conjunction with Nurse Manager.
- Develops reports as needed.
- Performs charge entry as needed and charge correction for patient accounts.
- Conducts requested audits for charge compliance, documentation QA, monitors trends, communicates feedback/necessary changes to charge nurses and managers.
- Assists Care Coordination with patient type and room and board corrections.
- Audits charting and generates reports for quality improvement projects.
- Verifies Inpatient stays for outside facilities to insure proper the correct account status for billing.
- Communicates with staff in a professional, tactful manner in order to obtain missing documentation or to clarify existing unclear documentation.
- Effectively communicates with the Coding Department in a professional and tactful manner to solve any issues that arise.
- Maintains a good working relationship within the department, other departments and with the medical staff.
- Performs chart reviews to reconcile bills for various rentals and services billed. Correctly charges each hospital inpatient unit for services billed.
- Covers the PCS account specialist at other facilities during vacations or days off. 4.6 Performs duties of unit secretary during vacations and days off.
- Follow up with unit managers for missing errors in documentation to correctly post charges.
- Is proficient in Word processing skills.
- Utilizes the Series system and caremanager/clinical portal to assist in assignments.
- Willingly accepts additional assignments and adjusts work schedule.
- Provides nurses and HUCs with updates and training as needed.
- Keeps current with coding and health information management issues as well as health care industry developments and trends by reading appropriate publications.
- Performs performance improvement functions through data collection and documentation reviews.
Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Ability to work with hospital staff in a collaborative manner.
- Excellent word processing skills and knowledge of Excel spread sheets.
- Critical thinking skill, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Preferred:
- 2 years experience in a healthcare setting
