SUMMARY (Basic Purpose of the Job) Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the Community-Based Trauma Advocate plays a vital role in supporting individuals affected by violence and trauma within the community. This position focuses on providing comprehensive advocacy and support services to survivors, facilitating access to essential resources, and promoting healing and recovery. The advocate will work closely with local community organizations, healthcare providers, and law enforcement to ensure a coordinated approach to trauma recovery. Responsibilities include conducting community outreach, offering emotional support, connecting individuals with therapeutic services, and assisting with navigating social services. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of trauma-related issues, exceptional communication skills, and a commitment to empowering survivors through a compassionate and culturally sensitive approach. The ideal candidate will have a strong connection with the Trenton community, demonstrating an understanding of its unique challenges and needs. Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, holidays, and weekends. **Note:** This is a grant-funded position, and employment is subject to the continuation of financial support from the grant program.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalency. Associates degree preferred.
Experience:
Applicants with personal experience in overcoming violence/ violence-related injuries/ the criminal justice system are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidate would have lived experience.
Other Credentials:
AHA BLS. Non-Licensed must obtain before end of orientation period
Knowledge and Skills:
Possesses a wide array of innate abilities and specific skill sets for successful interventions. Conflict resolution and negotiation skills. Strong communication skills, maintaining records, giving verbal case updates, and advocating for clients. Knowledge of urban violence issues. Must be punctual and extremely reliable. Highly organized and detail-oriented. The expectation of this position requires full-time on-site work and flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.
Special Training:
Proficiency with MS Office: Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide emotional support to individuals affected by trauma, fostering an environment of trust and understanding.
- Empower community members by sharing personal experiences and resilience strategies.
- Organize workshops and group sessions to educate the community about trauma, its effects, and coping mechanisms.
- Makes the connection with trauma victims and their families and enroll them in the violence prevention program to link them with supportive services, support groups, and other resources related to trauma recovery.
- Represent the community in discussions with local organizations, government, and stakeholders to promote trauma-informed care.
- Participate and facilitate support groups or gatherings that allow individuals to share their experiences and coping strategies in a safe space.
- Foster a sense of community by creating opportunities for social connection and mutual support among other violence prevention programs and trauma survivors.
- Collaborate with mental health professionals and emergency services when necessary.
- Work with partners to develop sustainability plans for programs and initiatives that support trauma recovery, ensuring long-term impact.
- Encourage self-care practices among trauma survivors to help mitigate the effects of vicarious trauma.
- Gather feedback from community members about the advocacy initiatives and support services provided.
- Under the guidance of the Program Coordinator, provides client referrals to community service providers based on established guidelines.
- Maintains intensive follow-up contact with clients, family, and service providers through frequent home visits and telephone contact.
- Documents consistently and accurately in written and computerized records all contacts with clients.
- Participates in violence prevention efforts with other providers as assigned.
- Communicates in writing and verbally with linguistic and cultural proficiency.
- Collaborates in community-based participatory research.
- Represents program at community meetings and participate in violence prevention efforts with other providers as assigned.
- Participates in weekly, monthly, and quarterly staff meetings.
- Represents program to the media, public officials, community leaders, etc. on strategies to prevent violence and improve services to the target population.
- Handles sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact. Interacts with the public, health care providers, community organizations, social service agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Completes client visits in community jails, courts, homes, schools, and other places as needed.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
