Position Overview
SUMMARY (BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB)
Functions as a member of the surgical team under the direction of Nurse Manager Perioperative. Provides assistance to the surgeon with retracting for OR joint surgical cases. Assists nursing staff and physicians with basic patient care, room preparation, and maintenance before, during, and after surgery.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: High school diploma or equivalency.
Experience: One year experience as a Patient Care Assistant, Nursing Assistant, or related clinical experience preferred.
Other Credentials: AHA BLS. Non-Licensed must obtain before end of orientation period
Knowledge and Skills: Good interpersonal and communication skills, detail orientated and highly organized. Proficient in English reading, writing and speaking skills.
Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities: Ability to work within a specialized fast paced environment. Ability to carry out detailed written and verbal instructions. Ability to relate and work effectively with others.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists in surgery with retracting, lifting, positioning, and holding body parts during surgery. This may require long periods of holding limbs during orthopedic surgeries.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and maintains sterile field while assisting physicians and nurses in surgery.
- Assists with operating room turnover and maintains cleanliness of the perioperative areas (i.e. mops floor, removes linens and trash). Assures room is ready for next case.
- Prepares stretchers, beds and patients in pre-op and post-op areas. Assembles suctions, cleans and remakes stretchers, stocks and checks par levels of blankets and pillows in warmers, and stocks personnel protection equipment.
- Transports patients safely to and from the surgery areas and assists nursing staff to maintain scheduled patient flow.
- Monitors patient during transport for changes and reports any patient or transport events.
- Assists with setting up an operating room for surgical procedures.
- Assists with stripping tables, beds, and stretchers.
- Practices aseptic hand washing technique according to policy.
- Disposes of waste materials, reprocesses instruments, scopes, and equipment per protocol.
- Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of universal precautions, infection prevention, and isolation procedures.
- Assists with the stocking of supplies in the perioperative areas. Stocks linen, suction supplies and anesthesia supplies in the Operating Rooms. Maintains an adequate supply of brushes, caps, masks, shoe covers and other supplies in designated areas.
- Performs other duties as assigned (e.g. transporting specimens).
